Picture Perfect

I was scrolling through Pinterest once and found something that said “When you really think about it, you’ve never actually seen yourself. Only in the mirror and pictures.” At first, I thought that was kind of crazy and a little spooky cause that means I don’t really know what I look like. But now it makes sense. Every time I used to ask my mom if I looked okay she’d say yes, but I always thought differently.

I think this is the main reason why we underestimate ourselves. We’re so used to how we look in the mirror, even though we all know that mirrors can manipulate how you look. Skinny mirrors exist and so do other mirrors that can just as easily contort your looks. It’s common knowledge in my choir class that if you rehearse mistakes you will perform mistakes. Is this what we’re doing with how we perceive ourselves? We are so dependent on our mirrors. It’s time we stop calling ourselves ugly or gross because of what we see in our reflection. The size of your stomach or legs in your reflection is like your perception of right and left in your reflection: the opposite.

I’m guessing you’ve tried taking pictures of the moon, the stars, the fireworks, or the sunset. I’m also guessing that those pictures didn’t turn out the way you wanted, at least 90% of the time. What am I getting at, you ask? What do most people post on Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook? Pictures!! Usually, pictures that we’re in. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just dread the pictures I’ve been tagged in cause I look horrible!!! But pictures make a 3-D reality into a 2-D memory, but just like memories, pictures aren’t always how they seem sometimes. That is not you in the picture, just as much as how the moon looks like a white dot when being captured. It’s hard to capture beauty the way it really is.

xoxo, Raquel
