I could tell this article was meant to be written, and the things I’ve seen and heard were leading up to this moment, me sitting on my bed with hands hovering over my keyboard.
Just like Isabell, I, too, am a Pinterest addict. I was scrolling through my feed one night and found a quote that said “What is a queen without her king? A queen.” Because a queen’s worth does not lessen when a man is not in the picture. If anything, she’s stronger than when she was before.
The word “queen” became very important to me. It was a word I used to compliment girls and hype them up, a title for strong women around the world. I believe all girls are queens. In fact, I’ve told multiple girls that they are. “Yasss, queen!”
Tonight I went to a movies with Isabell and the preview for Bohemian Rhapsody, a movie about the 70’s rock band Queen, came on. Then I got to thinking. What if the word expanded, and gave meaning to a larger audience? Say, including males? Think about it, every member of the band Queen is a man.
So, I did some digging and found out the lead vocalist, Freddie Mercury’s reason for choosing the name for his band that was originally called Smile. This is what Freddie said:
When I read this quote I got very giddy inside (despite that it’s currently 12:07 a.m). Freddie Mercury is right. The name gives off a vibe of strength and hope. A name, that when given, you would own it and be proud of it.
Anyone can be a queen. Female, male, other. It’s not about the gender you display, but who you are as a person. What you do in your daily life, how far you have come, and who you choose to be.
A man who is a ballet dancer. A queen. A man who is skilled in martial arts. A queen. A woman who can hammer a nail in wood. A queen. A woman who walks down the catwalk. A queen. And the list can go on and on.
It’s sort of what Lady Gaga sang, “Don’t be a drag, just be a queen.” Because the word is powerful all on its own.
Yas, queen! Wear your crown proudly!
