Sexism has been a thing for hundreds of years. That includes intentional sexism or accidental sexism, but comments like those are all the same. Many men, and even some women, have belittled females, but today I’m taking a few of the most famous sexist comments that have hit home and reply to them.
First off, there are some touchy subjects. If you feel uncomfortable in any way please discontinue reading.
“They have the right to work wherever they want to - as long as they have dinner ready when you get home.” John Wayne.
Wayne was an American actor and filmmaker who starred in 1969’s True Grit. But being an actor does not dismiss you from saying something so rude like this. Women do not need to have dinner ready the moment you get home. In fact, women do not have to make dinner every night. It’s like that saying when people don’t want to be told what to do, “You got hands. Make it yourself.” Am I saying women aren’t capable of working and making dinner? No. Am I saying that women being involved in food and kitchen chores are ridiculous stereotypes that need to be debunked? Yes. Women do not belong in the kitchen every second of every day. I don’t want to do the dishes for the rest of my life. I want to be a writer, a traveler, a teacher.
Also, if you say that you have no problem with women working wherever they want, then why is dinner more important to you than it is to her? Let’s say, hypothetically, you’ve nailed pieces of wood together all day, only took a 20 minute break, and the only thing you’re concerned about is if dinner is sitting on the table the moment you walk through the front door. Why can’t the situation be reversed? Why can’t the female do construction work and worry about dinner? Why am I the one who has to make your meal?
“ The words and works of God is quite clear, that women were made either to be wives or prostitutes.” Martin Luther.
Martin Luther was a professor of theology, composer, and claims to have been a priest. But how can you call yourself a priest when you’ve misinterpreted what the Bible says about women? First of all, God never commanded for women to be prostitutes. To better strengthen that fact, prostitution is literally a sin. But, that’s beside the point. Yes, women can be wives and be submissive towards their husband. But, forgive me in advance for the blatant remark, you are an idiot if you believe that those are the only two things a woman can ever be.
Esther from the Bible was a literal queen who used strategic moves to save her people from genocide. She dared to stand up to her husband, the king. Not only was Esther a Biblical heroine, but Deborah was basically a warrior princess. Deborah was a tribe leader, also known as a judge, who led an army. Deborah was the only female judge mentioned in the Book of Judges. The people of her time and the people she led had no problem accepting Deborah, a woman, as their leader. Judges were seen as ‘God’s people’, and gender was UNIMPORTANT.
“Nature intended women to be our slaves. They are our property.” Napoleon Bonaparte.
‘First Timothy 3:11’ is what I have to say to this. God literally said that women should be treated with respect and should not be treated as slaves. Can’t argue with the beholder.
The next comments that were made by Norman Mailer and Clayton Williams includes the touchy subject I warned you about at the beginning of this article. So, again, if you feel that you cannot handle it, you are welcome to leave this blog post.
“A little bit of rape is good for a man’s soul.” Norman Mailer.
“If rape is inevitable, just relax and enjoy it.” Clayton Williams.
Rape has been illegal for a very long time, so why waste your breath and make such a vulgar comment? One, rape is not good for a man’s soul. Neither is it good for a woman’s soul. Two, sexual harassment tears people apart emotionally, mentally and socially. And, rape is not inevitable, so I don’t understand why a man, or any human being for that matter, would say something so disgusting. For the rape statistics to change, it takes males to change their opinion on it. It takes what Norman Mailer and Clayton Williams’ comment about rape to be wiped from existence.
“You know, it doesn’t really matter what they write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass.” Donald Trump.
All women, no matter age, size, color, or profession are all beautiful. But to degrade women down to a “young and beautiful piece of ass” is disgusting to hear. This was before Trump ever became the 45th president of the United States, but he continues to say such horrid things.
I am not just a beautiful piece of ass. I am fighter. I am gorgeous. I am loving. I am respectful. I am strong. I am a hard worker. I am a feminist. And, I am done with what men have to say about women “not being enough”. I am a writer, and I don’t have to come to terms with your definition of beauty to get me to my goals, to get me to where I want to be. Being sexualized is not as fun as you think it is. And I will not apologize for saying that my body has nothing to do with my past and future successes in life.
