Pottery | Janessa Nelson

Do you want to know something interesting about feminists? We, despite our appearances and views, are all potters. Now, I don't mean literal potters but figurative ones. We, as individuals and as a group, are constantly making changes and adjustments to the soft clay that is society. We shape and mold, careful at times but sometimes we find out that we accidentally made a mistake we don't know how to fix.

Now, of course, it doesn't help that there are billions of other potters shaping the same piece of clay to their views and beliefs. We have an advantage compared to some of the others, though; we have numbers and our numbers are growing. With more hands on the mold, we have more control over what it becomes. Despite this, we still struggle to see that we can't only focus on one issue.

You see, if we all are focused on one misshapen lump on one side we'll miss the air socket that causes our finished piece to explode in the kiln. We can't ignore the causes of these issues either. The cause of our issues are not men and I think that is sometimes a common misconception.

The cause of our problems is history. Throughout history, women have been seen as inferior and weak to the opposite sex. We can't change history and rewriting it isn't the best choice, so what do we do? We learn and we teach others. We have to tell them they're wrong but if we are cruel they won't listen.

Its hard to understand, yes; but it's even harder to fix. That is why I used the example of sculpting clay. You can know what you want the finished project to look like and you may have an idea of how you'll get it there, but it will be harder than you think. You also have to remember the finished piece of pottery is fragile and one wrong move could cause it to shatter.

You're probably annoyed with me by now and I don't blame you. I do have good news, though; now you won't ever be able to look at a piece of clay without thinking of feminism.
